After saying good bye to martin we didn't loose a minute because we had to get back to Baltimore within one week. Of course we didn't want to drive only but "take with us" some sights "beside the way". So we reached the Great Salt Lake right on time to be able to see it (sunset). We kind of "planned" it by calculating distance with probable sunset time, time zone and driving speed. After dark we stopped at Salt Lake City and were lucky to hear the end of an open air jazz concert. The night we spent in the car on the road to the Yellowstone National Park somewhere in Wyoming.

The next morning we knew why it has been a good idea to make such a big detour on our way back. The Yellowstone National Park presented itself with an overwhelming landscape and a lot of interesting animals. The most impressive encounter has been a buffalo from 10 meters. But all the other things, too, made it worth to visit the park: geysirs, the Yellowstone river, incredibly beautiful natural formations and so on. We saw also the rests of the big fires and learned, that it's not always negative when the forest burns. After an incredible day we left the park to the east and spent the night in Cody, the town of Buffalo Bill.
Mount Rushmore was only a short stop on our 4000-miles-return to Baltimore. Once again we made it on time to be there at sunset and see the spectacular light-show.
The end
Directly after the show we went on. We had to keep a tight schedule. Besides the "driving in shifts" had the advantage that we always had some time left to see something or to spend some time with old friends. In this case with Lee and Sandra Wade from Wahoo, NE, where we could spend another night. The next short stop was St.Louis with a sunset at the Missouri river joining the Mississippi. We then began to call ourselves the "sunset-specialists". Then we slept a night in Pittsburgh with the Ivins family, who were extraordinary hosts again. Then we arrived at Baltimore after a total of 10,000 travelled miles (about 16,000 km). Our friend Matt was our host again in Baltimore. The next morning we went by bus to New York City, left our luggage at the bus terminal and climbed the Empire State Building. In the evening of September, 21st we left America with Martinair from Newark International Airport.
